Hong Kong Musings

This is my third day in HK, it has been quiet a ride so far. Some fantastic and some not so fantastic experiences. The flight journey went without any hassles. HK Airport is quiet a sight. There is sea on both sides and the plane lands on a thin strip of land right in between the sea. An Aerial view might make you feel that the pilot takes a close call to land. The Airport is one of the finest I have seen. The Metro picks you up right from the airport and drops you to the city. The University is in an Island called Hong Kong Islands and that is different from HK City. Checked in to the hostel. Comfortable one but a lil small for 3 Indians!! My first moment of truth happened when I went to have food in the Univ. restaurant. The lady couldn't speak english and I couldn't convey the fact that I want a Veg fried rice without the egg (Egg is present in almost every food). That left me a little depressed. I didn't Imagine that language can be an issue in a country ruled by...

Life is like that

Dear loved ones back home, Its been over 2 weeks since I have arrived and it already looks like a long time ... God what a horrible cliche that was ! Have sorted out some of my Initial hurdles. Food is no longer an issue now... I cook daily if u can call it that way. Bank accounts, laundry, Grocery stores have all fallen in place. The demography of the city is such that even GPS Thangam will get easily lost. The city is built on a hill... every cent of land is cleverly used. HK is great at making something out of nothing; I am hoping it will do the same for me someday. Apart from the language there is another downside of life here. U will be shell shocked to see the size of the apartment. A 340 sq ft house will have 2 bedrooms, Kitchen, Hall and a Bathroom. I will be moving to one such apartment soon :(. It seems that is the normal size of a house in this part of the world. HKU MBA Classes have started in due earnest. There is a Swiss professor, A Professor from Shanghai who co fo...

HKU MBA Orientation

This is going to be a short post. Just came back from MBA Orientation. Had been quiet an experience. It was an overnight stay in HK Disneyland hotel with lot of team building activities. The class composition is quiet intimidating both by nationality and experience. Though India and China Constitute a big chunk of the class composition. There is a Speech writer for a US politician. A Chinese who worked for UNESCO in Cambodia, A Ship Captain, A film director from Taiwan, A practicing lawyer from Canada, Italians, Netherlands, Some bankers from Shanghai and a Quality Manager from India (U know who that is !!). My first class in accounting is commencing today. More on this later
