Shining India or Smelling India

Dear loved ones back home,

I cant refrain from doing a countdown on how long it has been since I left my dear Mother land ( I also cant help from overly dramatizing!!)
It has been 3 months since I came to Hong kong and its the end of term 1 at HKU. The last 3 months have been quiet event full. I had a short gestation period before Term 2 onslaught began last week.

Hong Kong - Love it , Live it

For those of you whose mood is affected by Climate, HK is heaven in September. This is a month of perfect blue skies with a bite in the air and a sharpness in the light.Simply put it is a very optimistic and " life is full of hope" kind of a climate. HK is a union of several dis joined Islands and recently I had an opportunity to go to one such beautiful Island - Discovery bay with a population of around 14,300 residents with a size able expatriate community of residents from over thirty countries. The entire Island is a no motor zone and people commute in a ferry to office everyday! The island has all the spectacle you can imagine and is closely inspired (read copied) from Hawaii Islands. I will leave the description of the island to the imagination of my readers. But this place clearly inspired us students to search hard for a job in HK !!

HKU MBA (Shining India ahem ahem ....Smelling India )

I mentioned about Prof. Ali's (From Iran) class on creativity and business design, apart from that I am also taking IBE (International business Environment) by a Brit and Managerial Finance (HK - Relative of Jackie Chan!). Every Prof. has his nuances about managing a class. The Brit is a very typical Brit and does not tolerate late comers, no cell phones, no laptops, no food and drink during the class and surprise Quizzes. This system is apparently anarchy for some of the American and European Class mates and they are expressing extreme grief over such in human rules... Obviously no Indians found it reproachful considering this is the norm at schools back in India. The rebels have fired an email to the Dean - (An American) and expect some relaxation on what they deem as ridiculous rules !! I am amused and will let you know what the American Dean has to say.

Prof. Ali discusses big Asian business in his class, the discussion is then followed by a Video of the Interview with CEO and his/her perspective on how the business will take shape in the next few years. It was India's turn this week and the company in Question was Biocon lead by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. After the rote discussion on future of Pharma and inherent problems in an Industry with High R&D Costs, it was time for the Video. The Video opened with a dirty ring road from a long shot and Kiran Shaw telling Prof. Ali about the problems of travelling through this road daily to reach her Office near electronic city. She says the plight of the road alone should tell us that Indians are true survivors, Prof. Ali was was almost smirking but agreed with Kiran. After a few mins, the Camera Pans to Vidhan Soudha and focuses on the big caption " Govt. work is God's work" . He pauses the video and remarks that this is good reason why the Govt. is not doing much... because its God's work and not Govt.'s work. There is murmurs of laughter in the class. After a few mins of faffing the video ends like this " Kiran might be able to steer Biocon to be an Upmarket Bio tech company but can she solve the dismal infrastructure problem that besieges the quality of Bangalore's growth". The 3 Indians in the class are kinda red when an Egyptian comments that this video reminded him of Cairo. Prof. Ali was quick to comment that he recently visited Cairo and that Bangalore was worse. Ouch that hurts ! However he did mention that he had met several Asian CEO's for his Project and Found Kiran Shaw as the most charismatic and driven professional. He had some good words on the quality of work force at Bio Con. The class finally ended on this note " People from Dev. Countries like HK/Europe/America should consider themselves as fortunate since they don't have to see poverty everyday like the Indians and Chinese do (What Crap!). Now I would be exaggerating If I said this incident hugely affected me, on the contrary I laughed it over with other students, I think this kind of turns out to be a unique advantage for Indians who often are model immigrants in many developed societies and do have the knack to make the best out of the limited facilities. I wear my Indianness on my sleeve and am only too proud to yap about being an Indian.

MBA Rankings

MBA Rankings have been released by Economist and HKU has been ranked 37th across the world. HKU is particularly strong in personal development and educational experience and has been ranked 4th best in the world above Insead and Yale. As a dampener we are ranked at 98th in the world in terms of Increase in Salary and 100th in Final salary. HKU is pleased with the rankings but this does not mean anything for current students who still will have to figure out their own career path.
